If you're looking for a unique way to celebrate the baby shower and you have no skills to bake a cake - don't worry! Cupcakes are the solution! Baby Shower Cupcakes
are quick to make, easy to bake and decorate. You do not need to be a baker or cake artist to make pretty and delicious edible confections for your guests.
What You'll Need For Baby Shower Cupcakes
- A few boxes of pre-made cake mix from the grocery store. Check the package directions for how many the box will bake.
- White icing, a rule of thumb is 1-2 tubs per box of icing. You'll want to pick up white icing so you can tint it to whatever color you'd like.
- Food coloring
- Paper Cupcake liners so your cupcakes don't stick inside the pan
- Cupcake pans disposable or non-stick metal
- Cupcake stands - you can pick these up from local craft stores or online. While these aren't necessary (you can set them up on dishes) cupcake stands do display them well.
- Cupcake Decorations Toppers, small pacifiers, rattles, babies, rocking horses, teddy bears or whatever small decorative baby items you can find at a craft store.
- A frosting decorating kit if you want to go fancy - the Wilton kits run about 8.00 and contain frosting bags and 4 tips. Otherwise a butter knife will do.
- Cupcake tupperware or deep disposable tin pans to transport the cupcakes to the destination
How To Make Baby Shower Cupcakes
We recommend baking the cupcakes the day before the shower so that they will be fresh. We recommend spraying your cupcake pans with nonstick baking spray (in case some of the batter runs over) and lining the trays with liners. Follow the instructions on the box mix, and bake the cupcakes as per the directions. Allow to cool.
Put the frosting in a bow. If you are planning on tinting more than one color, use 2 or more bowls depending on how many colors you wish to use. Place several drops of food coloring into the frosting, mix well until the desired color is reached.
How to Frost and Decorate Baby Shower Cupcakes
After the cupcakes are completely cool (if they are warm the frosting will melt) use either the butterknife to smooth the frosting over the tops of each cupcake. If you are using a frosting kit, select one of the tips and fill the frosting bag about 3/4 of the way full. Twist the top of the bag and using steady pressure in a downward motion slowly squeeze the frosting through the decorative tip. Using a circular motion, swirl the frosting over the tops of the cupcakes. When you get to the center of the cupcake, pull upwards and stop pressure, releasing the frosting into a "peak".
At this point, you can use several things to decorate your cupcakes. You can use cute cupcake toppers such as the ones found in our baby shower cupcake
party kits which includes the cupcake wrappers and toppers. Simply insert each stick into your cupcake for instant decoration.
Baby Shower Cupcake Ideas
Other ideas are to use sprinkles, small decorative babies, plastic pacifiers, rattles, rocking horses etc and gently press into the frosting of the cupcakes. There is no need to do anything else, this is the simplest way to make baby shower cupcakes
Of course, if you are creative there are some variations such as creating your own cake batter and buttercream frosting, to rolling out your own decorations and babies out of fondant. You could also tint the frosting peach colored and use black or brown piped icing to "draw" little baby faces and use a small piece of rolled licorice to make "hair".
If your guests don't know the gender of the baby yet and you want to reveal it to them, cupcakes can be decorated in a neutral color and have a filling of pink or blue in the middle.
Baby Shower Cupcakes For Girls
If you are specifically doing a theme for girls you could use pink strawberry frosting, or yellow cake infused with a strawberry jam center and topped with pink tinted butter or whipped cream frosting. (Whipped cream needs refrigeration and is hard to hold decorations). Choose pink wrappers and pink toppers or even pink sugar to give it some sparkle! If you're having a princess theme why not place little wands in each one?
Baby Shower Cupcakes for Boys
While the cake, filling and frosting can remain the same for boys and girls, the decorations are much more varied for boys. You can decorate the cupcakes in blues, greens, reds, yellows or any other fun color which will give it "pop". Decorations can include cars, trucks, animals, sports or any other boy theme. You can find decorations for these types of cupcakes at craft and party stores.
You shouldn't worry about making elaborate baby shower cupcakes, most of the women will eat them, no matter the shape, size or how they are decorated. Baby shower cupcakes can be mixed and matched with a variety of cake flavors and icings. You may want to ask the Mom-to-be what her favorite flavors are and customize the baby shower cupcakes around them.
Cupcakes are also great when served during a baby shower tea party. These little delicate and bite sized treats are just perfect for this type of shower. Don't forget to hand out favors for your baby shower tea
