What are wedding favors?

If you've come across this page, you must be asking yourself exactly what the title asks: "what are wedding favors?" If you look up 'favor' in the dictionary, you'll find: a gift bestowed as a token of goodwill, kind regard, love, etc. And that's exactly what a wedding favor is - a small gift presented to your guests to thank them for sharing their special day with you!

Originally, what we now know today as wedding favors were called bonbonnieres. Often bombonieres were small trinket boxes made of porcelain or crystal and possibly adorned with precious stones and filled with delicate confections or even sugar cubes. At that time, sugar was considered a luxury and only treasured by those who were wealthy. Later, when the price of sugar dropped, it became more and more common to present guests with a bonbonniere at the wedding ceremony. Couples also started replacing the sugared treats with almonds instead, supposedly symbolizing well wishes on the bride and groom's new life together. Sugar-coated almonds called confetti were then introduced, which evolved into sugared almonds--better known as Jordan almonds--which became the "it" wedding favor for modern day weddings. Traditionally, five Jordan almonds were given to the guests in a small box and were meant to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. The almond's bitterness and the sweetness of the candy coating were meant to represent the bitter sweetness of marriage.

Wedding favors have certainly come a long way since then. Though Jordan almonds are still used, chocolates and mints are now a popular candy choice and a great alternative. Wedding bells and bubbles are still common and used during the wedding ceremony. But there's thousands of other unique wedding favors that far surpass the traditional Jordan almond gift. Popular choices of wedding favors today include wine bottle stoppers, coasters, place card frames and holders, drink or cookie mixes, and many things practical or personalized.

When shopping for wedding favors online, you'll find that most of them are ready to give away, neatly packaged with a ribbon around the box and a simple "Thank You" or "For You" tag attached to the bow. Though you want your guests to enjoy the favor itself, you want it to look presentable too! Pre-packaged favors are great for last minute events where you have no time to put things together. But some crafty brides still love to make their very own wedding favors too. Do it yourself wedding favors include tons of wedding favor packaging, from boxes for your gifts to personalized favor ribbon, or personalized tags and stickers to truly make the favors one of a kind.
